KEMIJSKI INŠTITUT / NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF CHEMISTRY (NIC)

The NIC is a leading Slovenian research institution in the field of chemistry and related scientific disciplines. Basic and applied research focuses on areas of long-term importance for both Slovenia and the world: materials research, life sciences, biotechnology, chemical engineering, structural and theoretical chemistry, analytical chemistry and environmental protection. Thus, the NIC meets the needs of the domestic and foreign pharmaceutical, chemical, automotive and nanobiotehnology industries.

The ILIMITED project is coordinated by NIC’s Department for Catalysis and Chemical Reaction Engineering. The department focuses on chemical process engineering, reactor and unit operation design, and multi-scale process modeling. Their key research areas include carbon dioxide and natural gas conversion, hydrogen and fuel cell technologies, biomass valorization into bio-based compounds, and (bio)pharmaceutical processes.

ARISTOTLE UNIVERSITY OF THESSALONIKI (AUTH)

AUTH is the largest university in Greece, with over 75,000 students and a strong tradition in multidisciplinary research. The School of Sciences is one of the founding units of AUTH (1925) and the Department of Chemistry, founded in 1943, is engaged in all basic and applied chemistry sectors, including general and inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry and biochemistry, physical-chemistry, analytical and environmental chemistry, chemical education and informatics, and chemical technology and industrial chemistry.

In ILIMITED, AUTH is represented by the Laboratory of Chemical and Environmental Technology (LCET) of the Chemistry Department. LCET specializes in catalysis and CO₂ valorization. Within the project, AUTH leads the development of heterogeneous catalysts for CO₂ hydrogenation into methanol and light olefins, and conducts the techno-economic assessment of the most promising solutions, supporting the creation of scalable and efficient renewable fuel technologies.

GLOBAL OMNIUM MEDIOAMBIENTE, S.L.   (GOMSL)

GOMSL is part of the Global Omnium group. Manages over 350 WWTPs and produces more than 19 million kWh per year by biogas cogeneration. It is certified by AENOR for the Management Systems for Environment (ISO 14001), Energy (ISO 50001) and R&D&I (UNE 166002).

Global Omnium’s involvement in the ILIMITED project is crucial for validating the methanol production, ensuring its feasibility and environmental impact. By testing the produced methanol in active sludge and constructed wetlands, Global Omnium will assess its effectiveness in denitrification and its potential for valorising the rejection stream of a purification of the methanol in anaerobic digestion, contributing to circular economy principles. Their expertise in water management and sustainable resource recovery will provide essential insights, reinforcing the project’s innovation and aligning it with real-world applications in wastewater treatment and resource valorisation

UNIVERSIDADE DE AVEIRO (UA)

The University of Aveiro is a public foundation under private law, dedicated to higher education, research, and societal cooperation. Established in 1973, it is recognized as one of Portugal’s most innovative universities, offering state-of-the-art infrastructure, high-quality research, and a distinguished faculty.  With 15,000 students in undergraduate and postgraduate programs, UA actively collaborates with national and international partners, contributing to scientific and technological advancements through research and innovation.

In ILIMITED project, UA focuses on screening and selecting task-specific solvents for methanol and water separation at high temperatures. Using COSMO-RS modeling, we evaluate thousands of ionic liquids (ILs) and thermally stable solvent mixtures, identifying candidates that enhance selectivity and reactor efficiency. UA’s expertise in thermodynamics, molecular modeling, and solvent design ensures the project identifies the best solvents to enhance methanol synthesis efficiency and drive CO₂ conversion technologies forward.
